In either case, a temperature and humidity sensor can trigger a fan, heat plate, or alert without requiring you to walk out every hour to check conditions.
A permanent chicken coop can use the same logic. Instead of turning on a heat lamp based only on the outside temperature from a weather app, it is better to respond to the actual temperature inside the coop. Chickens do not need to be babied through normal winter weather, and too much heat can create its own problems, but there are situations where supplemental heat or ventilation may be useful.
